Re: My low E and F are muffled, and speak poorly; does everybody's do this?

O-o-o-o-o-kay!

Well, we had just finished our last number, and I had gone to the microphone, carrying the oboe, to thank our audience.

That done, I returned to my place, and started chatting with the other members of the trio. I pulled the swab out of my oboe, and leaned over to put it down on the peg -- gently, but moving a little too quickly, I guess.

The oboe missed the peg and went clattering to the (concrete) floor.

I died about a thousand deaths, right then and there. I am SO obsessively careful with this oboe, and I was SO relieved that I had finally gotten it playing right again after its inexplicable difficulties following a minor repair.

At first it seemed not to have been hurt by the fall, but when I got home, I discovered that the C and C# keys were jammed -- they both operated independently, but the C# wouldn't pop back up after being pressed down. I isolated the problem, and decided to remove the rod and key touch for the C#. I don't know why that worked, but apparently that's where the problem was, and when I put it back together, everything worked!

My teacher said that it probably hit on the bracket-type thing which goes over the C# rod, and just dislodged it a little, and by removing and realigning the rod, I put it back into place.

Bottom line, I am learning WAY too much about oboe repair these days.

Susan
