 Re: Oboe/EH reed tie-off length

Sorry, but I have to agree with d-oboe, that the reverse is true. My experience is that tieing shorter (when all else is truly equal) produces a smaller opening of the finished reed at the tip.

To quote from "The Art of Oboe Playing", by Robert Sprenkle and David Ledet in Ledet's chapter on Reed Adjustment: "Adjustment of the opening can be accomplished by moving the cane on or off the staple. Placing the cane farther on the staple will make the tip opening smaller. This is caused by a fulcrum which is formed approximately in the area where the shape begins to taper noticeably when the binding is applied, and brings a lever principle into play. When one end is made larger, the other (end) becomes smaller and vice versa." There is a good illustration of this following this paragraph in his book.

But of course you really should first determine the proper tieing length for a given combination of shape and staple so as to just have both sides sealing completely adequately as the final wrap of the thread reaches the end of the tube. I mark the end of the tube with a pencil line straight across both sides of the outside of the cane to gauge when all come together. I've found for most shapes that I need to stay within + or - 0.30 mm of any given optimum tieing length (once determined) to give consistent best results.

So changing the tie-off length would not be the best way to control changing the finished reed opening. I believe achieving a given desired finished reed tip opening is better controlled through the selection of: 1. cane diameter, 2. staple characteristics or 3. overall width of cane shape, in that order.

George
