Ah, I do things somewhat differently. I measure from the base of the staple to the tip of the cane when I tie. I do the American scrape and don't use any wire, though it might be interesting to experiment with wire.

I think I read on one of these posts, that if everything else is the same, there is an impact on the opening of the finished reed depending the length of the tied blank. I tend to tie between 72 mm and 74 mm for the total length but wonder what effect those differences might have on the reed opening.
