Hi there
... try this check-list, see which one/s help most
... how long have you been playing? if you've only been playing a short time, focus on points 1-5
... are you playing a plastic or a wood oboe? Plastic often sounds thin up there, so point 5 is your best bet
(from easiest / hardest to do)
1. moist enough reed
2. open the correct octave keys (top F - G# on 1st, top A to high C on 2nd) ... AND the half hole is closed by now, right?
3. reed responsive enough for upper register
4. reed stays open enough (reed too wet or too soft will close down)
5. boost air pressure and hold it there
6. embouchure rolled over a tad to get the sweetest reed spot for playing up there
7. lower jaw a notch, slightly backwards, to deepen mouth cavity
8. open throat wide to maximize air flow
9. slightly softer lower lip with slightly firmer upper lip
10. air-stream focused into 'laser' beam down centre of pipe
... if things are much better by step 5, good, the oboe isn't leaking
so, tell us what works for kiwi, OK?
