Howard, et al: Here's a link to the thread we had a few months ago about the IDRS list, board, etc.

There's a link to the IDRS site in these posts. It works as of this morning -- takes you into the IDRS online site, where you can follow it out to do whatever you want, including subscribe.
But to reiterate, yes, you do have to be an IDRS member to subscribe and/or participate on the list and the board and the archives, etc.
The good thing about the IDRS list is the "star quality" of many of the participants, and being able to hear first hand about their oboe and bassoon experiences. I have sought, and been graciously given, advice from some well-known professional oboists. Worth the price of admission, definitely.
The bad thing about the IDRS list is that both the board and the list are actively (hyperactively?) moderated. No off-topic posting whatsoever is allowed, and even the mildest suggestion of a flame will get you bounced, no matter WHO you are. Some may consider that a good thing, but the consequent inability to engage in free interchange of ideas makes it difficult to develop the sense of "community" that we are blessed to have here at woodwind.org, thanks to Mark and Glenn.
Still and all, the IDRS is "the" professional double-reed association, and absolutely worth joining.
