My daughter is in 7th grade and has played for 3 years. Her teacher, who is very highly regarded, gave us this advice on replacing her beginner's oboe: Buy plastic and need an F key. Why plastic? Because a student in middle or high school who has to haul her oboe back in forth to school and home cannot control temperature and humidity fluctuations. Whereas a professional player can control the environmental conditions. Therefore under these conditions it is not when a wooden oboe wil crack but when. her advice to us was to buy a Fox 330 or Fox 300 oboe. We bought a Fox 300 yesterday. By the way her beginners plastic oboe also cracked. However the plastic on the Fox 300 or 330 is a much higher standard than the cheap Selmer. She said the wood oboe sound is a warmer sound but fo an intermediate player their is not much difference between the high end plastic and the same level wood.
