I don't think the question here should be plastic vs. wooden, but more student vs. professional. I've heard some wooden student oboes and they really aren't that good. I know there aren't many in existence, but I've heard a entirely plastic professional oboe, and they don't have a sound as rich or resonant, but it was still a very nice oboe. If you do like wood, as I do, I would wait until you have enough money to purchase a almost-pro, or pro model, because in these models the most care has been taken to ensure quality. If cracking is an issue for you, as it is for me (I live in Canada) I would suggest looking into the Buffet-Crampon line of "Greenline" oboes. They are made of granulated wood mixed with an epoxy-resin type substance. This new "wood" doesn't have a grain, therefore it doesn't crack.
Good luck in oboe hunting,
