Yes, I agree that it does have to do with the scrape. First, let me mention that I hardly know a thing about short scrape reeds, but it seems those three things you mentioned are all done because of how much bark is left on the reed with that scrape.
Thinner gouge sides, wider shapes, and longer reeds would all make a rounder, more vibrant, less stable reed. Leaving more bark at the bottom would have the opposite effects (more resistance and stability with a colder sound). I think its all a matter of balance.
I assume Marc makes long scrape reeds (seeing that he's in AZ), and then the side thickness could be a part the issue with pitch.
