Hi Marc -
Hi, Marc -
I make the current version of the Robinson tip - he asked me to copy his tip and gave me permission to put it in my catalog. I don't know if your tip is mine or an earlier incarnation (or whether yours and the tip I copied are from the same maker...), but my advice is the same as tfriedle's: build the same reed you're used to a mm or two shorter.
That tip is typical of shapes in the period from the 30's through the 60's after which the styles changed. I can't say I know why, but I suspect it was driven by the relationship between Lorée and John Mack. He was playing narrower shapes and praising Lorée for the oboes he liked best, using narrower reeds...
The Robinson shape I make is slightly narrower in the throat, slightly wider in the belly and slightly narrower in the tip than my copy of John deLancie's tip, which he got from Tabuteau. It's very similar to a handful of other shapes from that period. They are all way too wide for me; I played my career on a Brannen X which is still pretty wide, unlike many current tips.
Keep us posted on how it works out - I don't know a lot about really wide shapes. I make 'em but I don't play 'em...
