Believe it or not, the sharpest folks I encounter are actually 1/4 to 1/2 tone sharp.
True not usually at the 440 level but 880 and above. I was picking on the flutes for that mostly.
The sharpness happens for several reasons, none related to good habits. Worse case, a bassoonist, because she actually calibrated her tuner 1/2 step sharp and did not know the difference.
And this is not something I find in pro-level playing, just the community orchestras mostly, and some pick-up ensembles doing church services, etc..
I do a mix of both, so its very confusing at times.
And I agree the cents talk is probably the best. At least a semi-tone is consistent in measures across all ranges that way.
Box wine, eh? Well, its something where quality is going up all the time.
