Your synopsis pretty well hits the nail on the head.... and also what Chris says about wood and materials control.

I believe local and seasonal climate are huge problems: Howarth actually moved its factory for more favourable humidity. I made my own dampit and I have noticed the wood seems to shine more, so sealed or not it does help. Might this help the manufacture but hurt the after-sales results? I guess time will tell.

There are just so many factors involved that it's difficult to give a nut-shell advice: air pressure and temperature affect moisture and the wood's ability to take it; ambient humidity affects the dispersion of the dampit; so on and so on and so on. The important thing is not to rely on a less than half complete notion.

Craig: as for oil, the theory is that the wood has virtually no absorption of oil (known and tested fact - no ifs ands or buts about it). But I suppose if you oil it lightly and often, then that would help keep at bay the problems of leaching. What really "tees off" Laubin is when there is so much oil that pads are affected and residue starts building in the tone-holes. Because oil does like to creep, it doesn't take much for this to happen.
