You're all forgetting one aspect here - the playing in period.

Was this oboe played in as stated by the manufacturer or was it played for long periods from brand new?

September isn't a particularly good time of year for playing new instruments, particularly if you're in a climate where the weather is dry and getting cold and there are huge differences in temperature and humidity.

For players in harsh climates, you should consider instruments with lined top joints - Howarth do offer S45c oboes with partially sleeved top joints as a precaution against cracking for those living in less than favourable climates for woodwind instruments.

All wooden instruments have the potential risk of cracking, it's just one of those things. It's not the end of the world if it happens and provided it gets repaired properly, you shouldn't have any more trouble with it.

But to anyone buying a new instrument at this time of year, you're more likely to experience cracking now than if you bought it in March or April as you have the entire Spring and Summer to have it played in by the time Autumn and Winter set in and the risk of it cracking is considerably less.
