if I read your post correctly, the thicker the wood, the worse the cracking potential? Just curious if this is in line with observation over the years.

Expansion/contraction is due to humidity in wood (not thermal = temperature) which would explain the outwards expansion, not longitudinal. Grains swell with humidity, producing the swelling of the body: just like cane gets thicker and reeds get wider with soaking.

Plastic compounds likely expand due to temperature (need to find the studies) and the expansion follows the molecular structure rather than the grain pattern: this explains the all directions expansion.

I've heard that Mönning and Dupin (Rolland and Guy) instruments have a reputation for much lower cracking incidence.... but I don't know if that's with old instruments or if it still applies to new. I think they both use rather thick walls.
