Technique means to an end, not the end in itself, agreed
Show heart, agreed

Reality check -- takes time and experience to put it all together, get priorities straight, gain perspective ... about 30 adult years should do it, isn't that a really scary monster movie for beginners younger than 45?!

Reality check -- can't express heart adequately until really able play the instrument. All instruments, including voice, are technical challenges. Technique develops playing skills. The BODY is the ultimate instrument, the oboe merely one variety of using the body to express itself musically.

Real music is obstructed until player bonds habitually with their instrument of choice, through an abundance of experience with technical exercise. Once the muscles are trained and playing habits are there and on automatic pilot so to speak, the inner music and expressiveness is free to flow through the trained player's technical abilities to play the instrument.

Scare off beginners? Everybody's musical in some way or another, the question is which instrument is the most easily available to get started, and which instrument, eventually, is anybody going to find the most satisfying to express themselves? How many people on this board started on some other instrument, and switched to oboe? Why switch? Oboe probably more satisfying in some way or other, yes?

Really good oboes are too rare and expensive as a rental or purchase for general consumption, plus oboe's got a difficult reputation technically, plus ongoing overhead expenses with no-guarantee reeds, plus many opportunities to over-spend on really expensive accessories, plus lots of conflicting opinions as to how best to proceed. That's plenty enough to scare off beginners!

This board is the GREATEST for sharing technical stuff with all those who dare to take the plunge with oboe. Scare off beginners with technical stuff? Nyah! That's what this board is all about, helping everybody cope with technical oboe stuff!

Bring it on!
