 Re: jaw pain

The tapering off is usually when we take anti-inflammatories for a very long time: the body builds a resistance and/or dependency on them and this allows for a less stressful separation.

Reading your comments on the pillow, I wonder if your jaw pain is not rather a sign of general physical stress. I noticed of myself that I have always been grinding my teeth at night and this goes hand-in-hand with my generalized muscular condition causing fibromyalgia. Now fibromyalgia is considered "non-serious", but I would not wish it on my worst enemy, so I really hope you'll try my advice as prevention, if nothing else.

Generalized muscle strain can manifest itself in the jaw, fingers and feet (clenching a fist and jittery legs) because one set of muscles is imbalanced compared to the opposite action group (the jaw gets pulled back, but we are not built to push it out and forward).

The ABSOLUTE BEST treatment for this is athletic stretching (which is also usually incorporated in Yoga). A second best treatment is to use foam rollers. The purpose is to eliminate myofascia (sticky muscle tissue) and literally loosen and lengthen all the muscles of the body: this relieves pressure on the nerves at the joints whose pain reactions cause stiffness in the muscles (endless loop!).

Tense muscles in the limbs are bad because the pressure on the nerves cause signals to the brain to tense up the shoulders and back. Tension in the shoulders and back are bad because they bend the spine out of posture which causes pressure on the nerves near the spine: it's THOSE nerves which tense-up the wrists, fingers and elbows, disrupting the easy flow of notes when playing.

Trainers at the gym warned me about stretching "cold" muscles, so some exercise like walking (for the legs - need to find the equivalent for the arms) is very important.

ALL MY ENCOURAGEMENTS!
