Michael --
I am a big fan of "used". I am also a big fan of getting a full conservatory instrument from the get-go, if you have any inclination toward mastery of the instrument. As a former clarinetist, it is just mind-boggling to me that "student" oboes do not come equipped with all the keys. A clarinetist cannot imagine trying to learn on a stripped-down clarinet -- what's the point?
As far as sources for used instruments go, they are legion. As always, Ebay can be a good source. There are also good online music stores (brick-and-mortar stores with an online presence) like International Music Suppliers in Minneapolis who sell reconditioned instruments. I think Nora Post does used instruments, and maybe Carlos Coelho, too. And also the lady (Marti ????) who sells at usedoboes.com. There are just too many of these sorts of sellers to name them all. Do a Google search.
If you know someone who belongs to the IDRS (International Double Reed Society), you might ask them to search the classifieds there for you. And there is a classified section available right here on this board -- free to all registrants -- where you can post a "wanted" ad. Just click on the link to the right of your screen, where it says "classified ads".
One piece of advice I heard when starting out was to seek an oboe made by a company which only (or primarily) makes oboes. I think this is good advice, and leaves you with many good choices.
Keep us posted on your discoveries!
Susan
