The reed knife must be very 'sharp' to work well on the cane.
But its a special kind of sharp, not a sharp cutting edge but a little rounded off to produce what is called the burr or wire. You can see it on a properly sharpened reed knife.
The knife is really a woodworking tool and the burr helps the edge grab the cane with only the weight of the knife.
If you find yourself pushing down on the knife, its probably dull or lost the burr, and bad things will happen to the reed.
When you see things like a 'knife needs to be sharpened 10 times per reed', it is not an exaggeration. But once the knife is basically sharp, these frequent resharpening is done to keep the burr in order.
I'd suggest watching Kerry Willingham's sharpening demo, not to suggest you use the Speedy Sharp but because you will see the burr we are talking about.
