For optimum burr refinement, I use a flat rigid leather strop (impregnated with green chromium oxide) from the Reedery in southern California to strop the trailing edge & the AH rod from Roger Miller in Ohio. I sharpen on wet/dry sandpaper (low tech & dirt cheap…320/400/600/1000 grits) glued with 3M77 to plate glass…eliminates (1) the dishing problem in using Japanese water stones & (2) the lapping requirement to keep the stones flat (messy). Knife of choice is the Neilsen wedge. I sharpen razor blades for shaping cane on an EZ-Lap 1200 grit "stone" & refine them with a few passes on a translucent Arkansas stone.
Best,
john
