I think you are off to a very good start.

I agree with Mark about the reed fighting you. From your blog, I see you have a good grasp of the basic tests for reed function. So keep focused on those and they will guide you well I think.

Could you answer a question? Is that reed one you made?

That ? for a different communication later.

If your oboe is balky and the reed is not the problem, perhaps some adjustments are out. That can make things balky for even a good reed, and it also will influence how you make the reed to compensate for things. Lots of give and take in that, and lots to learn.

I don't want to step on your teacher's plans for your progress, so a will just say, the web is a wonderful resource, listen to lots of oboe, and develop your own opinions about what works musically and what does not.

I'd advise to be careful not to become too chauvinistic about American sound Vs. various European traditions because there is much to learn from all around the world. I made that mistake, and it really becomes an impediment to learning.

I've been playing on my own reeds exclusively since I was 14 years old, and it was really hard to learn. Resources were not so good back then. Buy the Weber Oboe Reed Manual for sure, and others are out there, too.

And one last thing. Fin the John Mack article called 'Effective Guidance for the Young Oboist'. I found it on the web and printed it out a long time back. I reread it every year.

Press on. Nice work.
