As you learn to make reeds, you will fix all those fighting issues mentioned in the previous responses. Don't get discouraged when things don't work out and GET EXPENSIVE SHARPENING STONES!
Learning how to scrape with a well sharpened knife takes its own time, but it is well worth the effort.
