The gap makes a tremendous difference acoustically if it's 1. there and 2. filled or empty.
If you do some measuring you will find that the length of the tenon is shorter than the depth of the tenon socket on most lorees. This means there's a slight gap in the socket. If you try filling that gap with washers, it throws off the acoustics massively. Loree has designed their oboes to have that gap, and have it play a critical part in the music making experience. I can't comment on other makers, but it should be noting that all of these aspects are intertwined.
