I use to play a bit high when I was studying (many many years ago) and my teacher got for me a metal ring (spacer) that I used to insert before inserting the reed; of course, the danger always was that I would forget to remove it after removing the reed and before cleaning the oboe, it would certainly get lost, and I would never be able to replace it (I always kept my eyes open for 'little metal rings'). Eventually (a few years later) I made myself one from a plastic tube, it was kind of tight and would have been difficult to be taken out but fortunately by this time they had invented the cleaning 'swaps' and whenever I cleaned the top joint with the swap, the plastic ring would come out. Nowadays if I need a ring (spacer), I make a whole bunch of 'jump rings', they can be made of different thickness, and I do not care if I forget to recover them or if they get lost. Also, nowadays for some reason I do not play so high but I also do not use 46 mm staples (something that I used to do) and sometimes, depending on the shaper I am using, I use 48 mm staples, even though normally I use 47mm staples.
