Hi Steve,
To look at measurements, check out www.oboe-shop.de. I almost always get my tools and materials there. They are quick and the prices are in my opinion, reasonable and standard. Use them as a reference guide. They also have shaper and staple lists available for download for free, and most of the popular and widely used models/brands will be listed. Do check it out.
I have never used Pisoni tips before, but can tell you that all the manufactuerrs who make shaper tips with the model numbers n, -1, 1, xn, 2, -2 etc all use the same sources of dimensions. Although, apparently the results do differ quite drastically from one to another. Chiarugi shaper tips are cheap and work fine. You could try them.
Asking your teacher is a good idea. Experimenting with too many variables at one time is extremely dangerous, as i have done so before.... So start with a standard that is does not lie at different extremes. Chiarugi 2 staples (47mm) and Chiarugi no.1 shape tied together at 74mm cut at 71-72mm will work fine with most French instruments. It takes a lot of experience with lots of trial and error to find out what works for your instrument, and in fact, what will NOT work for any instrument! All the best!
Regards,
Howard
