Steve hello,
Shaping is NOT a long process. Why don't you ask either your teacher, a colleague, or other local oboist if you can sit with them and shape a dozen pieces on their favourite shape? That way, you can get instruction and also find a shape that suits you.
There are hundreds of shapes out there, and most of them work. I could never get my Pisoni #2 shaper to tie on without leaking, but it could just be me. I haven't tried that shape for years. A new handle plus tip will set you back at least 200-250 USD, but check round the local oboist circuit first. Many oboists decide they will never be good reed makers and then just keep their (perfectly good) equipment moldering in their old reedmaking box. You might be able to pick up a decent shaper handle and tip this way.
