My Fox 333 weighs a good solid 2 lb. 2 oz, and is sometimes a challenge for my aging right thumb and forearm to hold on lengthy pieces, even after 4 1/2 years. So it's not a lightweight instrument.

I'd advise the mom to rent an oboe for a few months before buying one, just to be sure the "oboe thing" is going to "take". There's no sense spending even $1000 on a good used oboe if the girl is going to get tired of it in a couple of months.

I don't see that renting is that expensive; where I live (Central Illinois) my rental oboe was $65 a month, and after I'd played it for 6 months, I knew I wanted my own. So that was only $390 I spent on rental, which isn't much when you're talking about dropping $2000-$2500 on an oboe. It was a worthwhile investment to find out whether I really wanted to do this thing.
