I have to disagree with the suggestion that the metronome marking of a dotted half to 76 is in error. Such a marking is a frequent occurrence. The first examples which came to my mind are the molto vivace and the presto in Beethoven's 9th symphony. Whenever a composer uses three quarters to a measure and the pulse of the work is one pulse per measure (and in orchestral music the conductor would be likely to beat the measures "in one" instead of "in three"), you are likely to have a notation that a dotted half is equal to the specified metronome marking. And in the case of this Barret work, the pulse makes sense musically as a dotted half to 76.
That said, there is a misprint involved. Dutchy states that the version of Barret found in the Gekeler uses a dotted half to 76. My old Barret (from the 1950s) actually has a half note to 76. That would be a very improbable time indicator, as the measures are not evenly divisible into half notes, and I have not, in my 60 or so years of playing music, ever noticed such an occurrence. The original Barret book is loaded with such misprints.
