Elizabeth,

I admit you have a point there. Especially the conductor indicating "in one" did ring a bell. But in these occasions there was no time signature and the captain's word was law and that was that.
In such occasions I'd rather expect a "three tied quarters = 76" tempo markup than a dotted half even if they're mathematically the same. But conventions vary with style, country, era and past elections.
