d-oboe, I think the problem is going from 442 to 440. In your case (440 to 442) you can indeed just clip the reed and it will become slightly sharper but you can't add some extra reed on to make it slightly flatter (which is why he said if I'd told him earlier he would have made one which was slightly longer in overall length). In the end what my teacher did was to increase the size of the half moon (or whatever you call it in English) which lowered the pitch but gave it a very bright sound which I don't particularly like, so he then shaved some off the sides (ie made the whole reed slightly narrower) to make the tone darker.
