I'm not saying one should tune reeds to 440 and play at 442 - of course not. The tuner should be set to 442 when play testing, crowing, etc. My point is that the adjustments necessary to change a 440 reed into a 442 reed are so slight - literally one very tiny clip away. I'm trying to reassure ceri that it's nothing to throw arms up about, and have his/her teacher claim that the tone is ruined, or whatever. I went through this situation myself - all I had to do was click the tuner from 440 to 442. The only difference I noticed was that tuning clicked more easily - I didn't have to adjust with my face as much. (My home city of Edmonton plays at 440, Montreal at 442)
And anyway, most oboes that are sold are either 440/1/2 (except maybe a few select german models) so there isn't really a need to make huge equipment changes. A few clips and scrapes, that's all.
