I am learning in France and my teacher makes all my reeds which play at A=442. During the summer I am coming to England and hope to play with some other people who play at A=440. At my last lesson before the summer break yesterday I asked him if he could adjust one of my reeds to make it play at the lower pitch and he basically said "no" because I have a Marigaux oboe which was made to play at A=442. (In the end he did adjust one which will play at 440 if pulled out a tiny bit and also said I could try making one myself that was longer than usual but that I should be aware that doing so would make the tone suffer).
So, what I really wanted to know was is it true that different oboes play at different pitches and does that mean that Howarth oboes are calibrated to play at 440?
