Interesting, and it makes me wonder how the curved tip end is actually closing. There is a differenct hard to quantify quality to the sound.

I don't actually know how the oboe reed closes and opens while vibrating. I imagine as the most open part closes they close after the edges, quickly but 'gradually' meaning not all at once.

The rounded tip imagery I have in mind is a variation on that, and also needs to move from shortest to longest across the arc.

It introduces a new dimension to the reed's mechanical valve action.

Try it on a reed a bit too long early in the process and see how you interpret what happens.
