NO NO NO NO
THAT IS SO WRONG.
Saliva warps the reed even faster than water. Its only a matter of how you soak them. Prepare a film container or translucent(as you like) reed holder to soak the reeds. Only about (less than)1/4 of the reed should be in the water. After 2-5 minutes (depending on your reed), it will be ready to be played. In special cases when you have the time and want the best sound, soak a bit more of the reed and for a longer period of not more than 6-10 minutes. After that, remove the reed blow and suck out all the excess fluids. Let it rest somewhere to dry for about a minute or so and then return playing. It may sometimes be your embouchure which needs warming up instead of your reed. And make sure of the position and tension of your wiring too if you have any.
It is very personal on how you treat your reeds. Depending on your needs and your reeds condition, it is best you try to experiment with different methods. Both GMac's and phoenix_song's methods will work nicely. Just remember soaking it with saliva is not that bad, IF, you make 10 reeds every week?
