I definitely agree with oboeblank...
Reeds last longer, function better, and are less likely to crack if they are soaked in water. Human saliva has salt in it, which, left to dry on a reed, will rot it. I am also a firm believer in not having a soaking receptacle, but rather just running under the tap, and putting in the case.
As far as having back up reeds sitting in a water container...I really think that people should prepare their reeds more and be far more careful with them, instead of switching around reeds during rehearsals and concerts.
I have never had a reed crack on me to date, in a concert, or a rehearsal. I think what makes reeds so prone to cracking is "doing too much" to them. I have seen so many people soak, soak, soak, their reeds for the entirety of a rehearsal and then pull it out of the water and leave it in the open air, and then wonder why their reeds crack on them.
Soak it under the tap, wait 2 minutes (or so), and then play. That's all there is to it. Your reeds will last longer too, this way.
