Just as a resposne to D-oboe..

Yes, don't heat the ends unless you really want to ..

I do it for all reeds, including upto 10.5-10.75mm Diamater - it is still a good way to keep the reed on the staple and making the binding easier..

As per being "Dangerous" - it is no more so than playing with knives as we do everty day making reeds...

I agree that soaking is a good option !!
