She may not be dealing with small diameter cane.

And...if the cane is cracking because the diameter is too small...wouldn't it make sense to change the diameter, rather than use a (dangerous) heat process?

Mostly when cane cracks, it is undersoaked, or there is too much tension underneath the string, where the "hidden" cane is. Either that, or it is just bad cane. Make sure to really soak the cane, until it sinks to the bottom. (soaking in hot water makes this go faster) Also, scrape the "hidden" cane down a little bit to avoid cracking.
