I will elaborate -
1st Question - NO you will not warp your mandrel doing this, you are really just heating up the end of the mandrel in a flame, it does not change the shape of the madrel.
You do not need to get the mandrel RED hot, just heat it up enough that if you put the end into water it would "sizzle" - and yes watch out !! you can burn yourself if you are careless.
As per the other questions;
#4 Tie some binding string to your Stove top
All I mean is to tie some binding thread to a bench, in my case i attach it to the stove/cook top where i am heating the mandrel - Hope this now makes sense.
#6 place the hot mandrel in the end of the cane and do 2-3 quick binds at the very end of the cane
You place the heated mandrel into the end of the wet cane and then do 2-3 binds, you then take the mandrel out and undo the binding from the cane ( you do not keep the binding on).
You are left with a rounded end on your cane which fits the staple to the size of the mandrel.
Usually when you bind on one of these "Puppets" the sides close in 1-2 truns of the thread and you do not have cracks, or out of line reeds.
Oh and as per Schmitt's comments - RELAX... a good idea, if it cracks then it cracks...... the worst thing you have to do is throw it out and start again....
