Heat Scoring the end of the Cane

This is also known to some pople as Heat Binding oboe cane.

This is a technique generally used by German school players to get very small diameter cane (9-10mm) onto small bore german staples, with out splitting the cane - which is your issue.

The idea is that you mold the end of the cane to a heated mandrel, forming a nice round looking end to the piece of cane, making binding absolutly no problem.

My version of how to do it is;

#1 Shape & Fold the cane, & thin off the ends
#2 Hold the folded cane in place with plastic or a cut off of a Piece from a drinking Straw ( see picture attched)
#3 Soak the cane for about 20mins
#4 Tie some binding string to your Stove top
#5 heat mandrel on your stove top
#6 place the hot mandrel in the end of the cane and do 2-3 quick binds at the very end of the cane

That's it - and it only takes about 30seconds per piece...

It makes a sizzling sound and sometimes burns the end of the cane ( but this is not an issue as it will be under the binding in the end), it does though make a very round looking end ot the cane and it is the EXACT shape of the Mandrel.

Also, none of my reeds EVER split when binding after being heat scored.

I refer to these as cane "Puppets" on my site and they are just ready to bind.

Giev it a go !! and watch out for your hands and hot mandrels !!

NB. Make sure your mandrel and your staples/tubes are the same size and that your mandrel has a wodden handle.
