I was taught that a crack in the tied end of the cane is no problem, as long as it doesn't extend more than 1-2 mm above the thread. I have thus been splitting the ends of my cane for decades at the staple end. I have made decent reeds, played them in concerts, and gotten compliments on my tone quality. Relax!
