That sounds about right -
I do think however, that the "throat" area (where the cane joins the staple) has a greater effect on pitch than do the other remaining parts.
Consider this: the argument was the difference between 6.9 and 7.1 tips. 0.2mm additional width in the tip area will produce a noticeable flattening relative to all the same conditions on a 6.9 reed.
However, if one were to add 0.2 width in the throat area, the basic pitch level in the reed would drop tremendously.
As far as climatic conditions, I pretty much have the same situation (I'm in Montreal - similar conditions to Northeastern states). On the really hot and humid days, it seems like the reeds are just impossibly wild and flat. To cope with this, I usually use a thinner gouge (0.55-0.56) In the winter dry-heating season, I return to a normal gouge (0.57-.58) to keep the pitch down and try to make reeds more slowly so they don't end up too thin and weak.
