In *Acoustical Aspects of Woodwind Instruments,* by C. J. Nederveen, there was some note of the fact that abrupt changes in diameter didn't have particularly deleterious effects on acoustics. This is not all that surprising, as the sound of an instrument is caused by standing pressure waves, not by laminar airflow.
And somehow I can't imagine the people at Lorée knocking themselves on the head saying, "D'oh! Why didn't we think of that?" Most likely many have, and the experiments have been done....
