What my teacher does is, first, to give both side of the reed a swipe or two on a fine emery board, from about the point where the hump starts into the tip (i.e., the blend).

In her estimation, the balkiness or excessive resistance of a new reed is often due to its having too abrupt a transition from hump to tip. So, the action she has recommended works to make that transition area more gradual.

She's also a big fan of "finishing the tip" (as described on Martin Schuring's excellent ASU website).

If those maneuvers don't yield a more playable reed, then she would start working down the blend with a tip knife -- just a little at a time (sawdust).
