It's a nice thought to not adjust reeds - but in reality, if the reed isn't working at the time you need it, well, it has to be adjusted, regardless of how it will feel the next day.

There's no point in "sticking to a strength" if it inhibits comfortable playing. The point about adjusting reeds is so that they allow the oboe to be played. If OhSuzan knows what needs to be fixed in the reed, and she does a few quick scrapes to make her life easier, then why not? You compare excessive adjusting to drug addicts. Let me offer some insight into what I see most often. When oboists get neurotic about their reeds, it's because:

a) they didn't prepare enough reeds well beforehand
b) they haven't learned how to get what they want out of scraping
c) they remove too much wood at one time, or clip too much off
d) they have dull/improperly sharpened knives

Usually, when the oboist makes the reed properly from the first scrape, very minor, if any adjustments are needed anyway.
