Yes, some have better-in-tune low Bb's but the low Bb resonance vent isn't just about pitch.

The auxilliary low C is for the third finger of the right hand, not the pinky. You hold the aux low-C closed with the third finger and trill the C# with your pinky.

That's exactly where you *wouldn't* use the banana key.
For D-C-D you should just use the regular low C key.
In the case where C is a grace note, the banana key is particularly unsuitable since you have to slide off of it to go from low C to D.
In 30 years of playing the oboe, I'm not certain that I've ever used the banana key. I think I remember a picture of Ray Still on an album cover where the banana key had been removed from his oboe -- the posts were there but the key had been removed.
I also saw a Josef English horn at the 2005 IDRS that eliminated the aux low C as one of many modifications to reduce the weight of the instrument -- making it the lightest weight professional e-horn I've ever played.
