Doing just what you say Bob.
Dick White ( former EH Natl Symph Wash D.C.) was my instructor in grad school.
He put a lot of emphasis on how a little brighter sound acts as a carrier wave.
Projection in the live performance video attached here playing on carpet illustrates his point.
It really works well for me.
