Any sort of reflective surface under you will certainly help. My main teacher, Raymond Dusté (also Richard Woodhams' first teacher) told me many years ago, that the EH needed more edge on the sound, "in order not to sound like a fish horn."
It is likely that the <literal> pit, the hall and the rest of the acoustics are soaking up the high end of your sound. Build a reed with more edge on it and ask an outside observer to judge the results.
