I usually put a couple of sheets of A4 paper (or a single sheet of A3 if there's some around) on the floor in front of me when doing pit work - not only does this make it easy to see your stands, reed cases, water pots, etc. when the only light you have is the stand light, but it also covers the sound absorbing carpet in the pit (unless it's a bare wooden or lino floor).
