Hi Susan.

Yes, the inflation technique only really works with little reed in the face.

It has implications about reed design and requires some initial tip resistance to work. See thinning notes below about that subtle point.

And the nice thing for me is, I can position the oboe higher for brighter and lower for more covered sounds.

Just more flexibility and useful to me.

The reed thing that seems to have enabled this evolution is to thin the extreme tip more than I have before... with a knife and plaque Vs. sand paper.

It creates more responsiveness using the knife for some reason.

So last 1/3 mm or so... very, very thin... so the knife does not make much noise when landing on the plaque. Then thin the extreme corners also with very light knife stroke perhaps 1 mm off the end of the tip sides. A triangle with sides about 1 mm.

There are impacts to overall reed balance, but this is really working well for me.

And reeds tend to break in quicker this way, too.
