Five years ago, I sat in one of the small practice rooms in the Howarth showroom on Chiltern street and played many different instruments, eventually choosing a C-model Loree because it felt "happier" in my hands. I have been very contented with it, though it took a long time (~1 yr) for it (or me) to "blow in" and get that "bloom" on my sound.
Two weeks ago I repeated the experience, this time trying two different models of Howarth XL and a Ludwig Frank for comparison. Howarth have changed slightly the tone-holes on the XL to bring it more in line with the Loree feel. Nevertheless, of the three instruments I tried the older-model Howarth was by far the best; the Ludwig Frank a distant, distant third, though it looked superb.
Were I choosing a new instrument from the showroom I would have walked away with a Howarth XL, no question about it.
