I recently heard Martin Schuring play on a Howarth XL and my conclusion was that perhaps he could have also played on a kazoo and sounded just as great. I tried in many occasions and in many years Howarths but was never really impressed, because they seem to build a kind of sound into it which you cannot alter. Although, this "feel" is of warmth and stability and you can hear that in many many famous Howarth players. Josef is similar in this sense but even darker (and narrow in it's tonal spectrum) and in my opinion has a better scale for short scrape reeds (a true german instrument, the moennigs are actually quite french!)
Loree on the other hand... they have been selling so many instruments over the years, and making so many instruments every year that quality control is really going downward, and a spiral it is! BUT, still, an impeccable mechanism, and in this repair field they say it's "indestructible". With the "good" Lorees, and this is just the same advice as people who has replied before me (try as many as possible), there is so much resonance (some people do not like this!), and this is really necessary so that you can built projection and character into your sound. (listen to Elaine Douvas, Bart Schneemann) A very conservative way of making instruments obviously, with a more difficult lower register when the adjustment is not impeccable. But that higher register, that resonance, Loree remains a reliable choice for a reason!
