Re: Origin of Forked F fingering

Forked F vents and F resonance keys are completely different things - the F resonance key only opens when the F key is opened and usually has a small pad cup and tonehole on the opposite side of the body from the forked F vent tonehole (about level with the Eb tonehole).

F resonance keys are usually found on most German built and German spec instruments from other makers and often on full Gillet conservatoire instruments require the linkage for the split D#/E trill to be mounted differently to make room for the pillars and key barrel for the F resonance key as it usually runs underneath and parallel with the feather key (LH pinky cluster) barrel.

Some German oboes have the F key tonehole on the opposite side to where it normally is and may have the F resonance key mounted on a long arm that's soldered directly to the F key barrel.

I think Yamaha fit the F resonance key to their German spec (fully automatic) oboes as standard (plus fully auto 8ves, conservatoire 1-2-3 mechanism and low B-C link - maybe an extra spatula key for LH finger 2 that keeps the Bb key closed).

My Marigaux d'amore has an F resonance key fitted to it that's linked to the F key pad cup via an arm with an adjusting screw at the end and runs down the underside of the lower joint just below the right thumb. The Josef one is fairly similar to this but mounted on the opposite side of the instrument.
